How to Capture The Hidden Sonic World of Electronics

You can capture a ton of electronic sounds you can't perceive with your own ears with the help of a special mic.



Understanding EMF Mics


Electromagnetic Field Microphones (EMF) are microphones that capture sounds made from electricity so we can hear them and record them ourselves. They’re great for recording anything electrical (of course), household appliances, and any of your friends’ gizmos. Anything that draws power might make a sound, so feel free to experiment! Here are some of the sounds I've captured with mine that you can have:





Tips & Tricks for Recording

 

Here’s what to look out for if you do purchase one:


Problem: Ear fatigue from high frequencies and really loud sounds


Fix: Turn your gain lower than usual when recording these sounds and take frequent breaks


Problem: LOM’s EMF mic being out of your price range


Fix: In this case, just reach for Clippy’s $20 EMF mic which I have! It works great.
